Medicare in South Carolina is the same federal program as everywhere else, but the plans, premiums, hospital networks, and carrier options that are actually available to you depend on your specific zip code. A plan that works perfectly for a 67-year-old in Greenville might be a poor fit for someone in Hilton Head — different doctors, different networks, different premiums.

Every South Carolinian on Medicare faces one fundamental choice: stick with Original Medicare and add a Supplement, or replace Original Medicare with a Medicare Advantage plan. Here is the difference.
In South Carolina, this path is especially valuable if you split time between SC and another state, or live in a rural area where Advantage networks may be thin.
In South Carolina, urban areas like Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, and Spartanburg have strong Advantage plan options. Rural areas may have fewer choices.
Neither path is "better." The right one depends on your doctors, your medications, your travel habits, your budget, and your tolerance for managing two policies vs. one. We help you walk through it in about 20 minutes.

South Carolina follows the federal Medicare enrollment calendar. There are four windows when you can enroll or change plans.
The seven months around your 65th birthday — three months before, the month of, and three months after. This is your first chance to enroll in Medicare. Missing this window can mean permanent late-enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D.
October 15 to December 7 every year. This is when most South Carolinians review and switch their Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. Plans change each year — premiums, networks, drug formularies — so an annual review is critical.
January 1 to March 31. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different Advantage plan or drop back to Original Medicare during this window.
Triggered any time of year by qualifying life events: moving to or within South Carolina, losing employer or COBRA coverage, qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help, or a plan leaving your area. Most SEPs give you 60 days to act.
Late enrollment penalties are real, but Special Enrollment Periods and workarounds are common. We figure out which window applies to you in one phone call.
